The Optical Research Microscope Laboratory is located in room 408 of the School of Geology in Noble Research Center.

Dr. Elizabeth Catlos manages this facility for use by geologists, biologists, engineers, and other investigators who are interested in applying state of the art optical microscopy techniques to their research.

  • The Microscope: The laboratory is equipped with an Olympus BX51TRF System Research Microscope, which is a union of the expanded range of Olympus universal infinity system (UIS) and advanced differential interference contrast technology.  Stage movement is controlled by a ProScan microscope automation system. Both reflected and transmitted light characteristics of specimen can be viewed.
  • Digital Imaging Processes: The microscope is connected to a digital camera and a Dell workstation that runs MicroSuite software, a multi-purpose imaging software for taking single or mosaic images and for true color and monochrome image processing.  The station has two high resolution 17’ LCD monitors: one as on-screen menu and image display monitor, and the other as dedicated image display monitor.  An ink-jet color printer and a laser printer are available to print images.
