Summer Science Academy

For High School Students

The Summer Science Academy is a one week residential experience designed to let students exercise their research and reasoning abilities. Students in this year's academy learned basic concepts of research, data collection, survey design, computer use and presentation. They also were able to then put their knowledge into action through three hands-on learning experiences, including a library treasure hunt, a zoology field research experience, and a survey design and administering exercise. Students visited the OSU Bureau of Social Research, observed a statistician on the job, and participated in ongoing field research on crows in the Department of Zoology.

The academy occurred between June 13 and June 20, 1999. Students enhanced their mathematical and scientific reasoning abilities. They learned basic research design and statistical concepts, learned how to use computers for data analysis and presentation and as a resource of information, learned more about career opportunities in math and science, and gained information that will assist them in pursuing a college education and later career in the sciences.
